Mary knew a few shortcuts taking them back toward the Hairy Arms and parked her small hatchback in a side street.

“That’s the warehouse over there,” she said pointing toward a shabby light-industrial unit.

“Thanks, Mary,” Hamish said, patting her hand. “I couldn’t have come this close in the police Land Rover without being spotted. You can leave me here.”

“Leave you?” Mary laughed. “Don’t be such a dunderheid. If your pal’s in there, and you can get him out, you need somebody waitin’ out here. A getaway driver.”

“Getaway driver?” Hamish said, raising an eyebrow. “This isn’t some kind o’ game, Mary. You should go.”

“Well, I’m no’ goin’ anywhere,” Mary said, stubbornly, folding her arms.

“Aye, right,” Hamish said, then paused on seeing two men coming out of the warehouse front door. “That one wi’ the shaved head started the fight in the pub. Maybe your auld man was right. James must be in there.”

The two men got into a car and drove off. There were a few other parked cars in the street but no passing traffic and no pedestrians in sight.

“If you’re goin’ to take a look, you can try down that alley.” Mary pointed to the side of the warehouse. “There’s a back door down there.”

“All right,” Hamish said, taking a deep breath. “Stay out of sight, Mary, and keep your phone handy.”

Mary watched him lever his lanky frame out of the small car and walk briskly across the road toward the warehouse.

“Take care, Hamish Macbeth,” she said softly to herself, seeing him disappear down the alleyway, “you great overgrown elf…”
